Oscar Coop-Phane
Period: 2015-2016
Profession: Writer Oscar Coop-Phane was born in 1988 in France. After a hypokhâgne and a khâgne, he decided to make writing his main occupation. Oscar Coop-Phane has published three novels with Finitude:
Zénith-Hôtel , his first novel, which won the Prix de Flore in 2012,
Demain Berlin in 2013, and
Octobre in 2014. These three novels function as a trilogy about urban wanderers, their solitudes and their sorrows. Flammarion also published the short stories
Picon voyageur in 2013, and
Cours de la vie in 2014. He’s planning a new trilogy, about being sidelined: the first part will be published in 2016, by Grasset; the second will be written in Rome. He has lived in Paris, Berlin and Brussels, and his works have been translated into English, German and Turkish. He writes regular columns and collaborates with magazines such as
Vanity Fair, Numéro Homme, Le Figaro, L’Inconnu , among others. During his stay at Villa Medici, Oscar Coop-Phane will devote himself to writing the second part of a trilogy on the judiciary in Italy. The whole will function as a work on the norm and its marginals, on “setting aside”, through the story of the trial of an infanticide pig, in the 17th century, in the Papal States. Through the trial of an animal – of which there were so many – the aim is to bring to life, from the crime to the torture, the soul of each of the actors: the child’s mother, the judges and witnesses, the executioner, the crowd and the hacks. Oscar Coop-Phane sees this project as a choral novel about a strange historical phenomenon, a reflection on religious power and a “modest literary mirror of some Foucauldian theories “.
