Saed Haddad
Period: 2008-2010
Profession: Composer Saed Haddad, born in 1972 in Zarka (Jordan), is a composer resident in Germany. He studied philosophy in Belgium and then music composition in Jordan, Israel and England (PhD with George Benjamin). He took advanced classes with Allain Gaussin, Louis Andriessen, Helmut Lachenmann and Pascal Dusapin. In his compositions between 2004 and 2006, Haddad expressed his identity (his “otherness”) as an emigrant-immigrant from both Arab and Western cultures. Since 2007, Haddad has tried to move away from the postmodernist mode in which the artist uses his original tradition in his contemporary creations: Haddad finds in the “forgetting” of his Arab origins one of the keys to transcending postmodernism. Haddad’s works are performed by Europe’s most prestigious ensembles, orchestras and festivals. He is composer-in-residence with the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008-09. His compositions have won numerous awards. On Haddad’s website, you can listen to audio extracts of his music.
