Biography

Adina Mocanu and Alexandra Sand
Period: 2015-2016
Profession: Plastician Adina Mocanu and Alexandra Sand were both born in 1990 and are Romanian nationals. They live and work in Bucharest. After studying graphic arts at university, they turned to performance art and now explore this field as part of the artist duo they formed in 2013. Their research, which focuses in particular on the links between their identities as human beings and as artists, is developed in the context of public space and, more recently, in that of the “white cube” (galleries and museums). For them, public space refers not only to urban space, but also to the space where different self-awarenesses manifest themselves and, together, create a collective consciousness. They have taken part in a number of significant projects since the creation of their duo, including exhibitions at the MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, artistic residencies in Italy and Bulgaria, and collaborations with alternative venues dedicated to young artists in Bucharest. Entitled Presence and Utopia, Adina Mocanu and Alexandra Sand’s project for Villa Medici aims to bring together their interest in body awareness and “self-awareness” on the one hand, and new societies and man’s immediate reaction to a certain context on the other. Their research will focus on creating their own future, through both action and “non-action”. To this end, they will use performance art as their primary means of expression, combining it with other media such as video art. They will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Rome and seek to weave links between their own experience and that left by the artists-in-residence who preceded them.
