Thierry Kuntzel's Video Work

For the first time in Italy, the Villa Medici in Rome is dedicating a major event to Thierry Kuntzel (1948–2007)—a leading French artist trained under Roland Barthes and a pioneer of video art—by presenting three of his key works under the direction of artist-in-residence Christophe Marchand-Kiss. The program opens on Monday, March 17, at 8:30 p.m. in the Michel Piccoli cinema with the opening event, the screeningof *Echolalia* (1980, 32 min)—a video exploring the concept of the double and repetition, set to music by Jean-Yves Bosseur—followed by a discussion with Christophe Marchand-Kiss and producer Corinne Castel, as well as readings of the artist’s writings. From Tuesday, March 18, through Monday, March 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Salon Vert, the public can experience the installation *Venises* (1995, 8 min loop), a hypnotic fixed shot of the Lido capturing the passage of time and the flow of life. Finally, the closing event will take place on Tuesday, March 25, at 8:30 p.m. (Piccoli Hall) with new readings and a screening of *Nostos I* (1979, 45 min), a silent film that explores nostalgia, the emergence and fading of images.
