Cartoonist Jul and author Aïtor Alfonso present their comic strip The hunger of history – Volume 1published by Dargaud, at the Villa Médicis. Eating with Jesus and the Apostles, eating at the Woodstock festival, on the cotton plantations in Scarlett O’Hara’s time, or with the Aztecs in Mexico when the Conquistadors arrived… the whole of the world’s history unfolds on our plates, in an album that’s as funny as it is erudite. Through the prism of gastronomy, we gain an extraordinary perspective on the destiny of our ancestors, their thoughts and their passions.

Jul
Jul was born in 1974. His breakthrough came with his first comic book, Il faut tuer José Bové. Released in 2009, Silex and the City is his first series. With Charles Pépin, he then turned his attention to philosophy with La Planète des sages (2011) and Platon la Gaffe (2013), then to ancient Greece with Cinquante nuances de Grecs (2017). Like Silex and the City, the latter has been adapted into an animated series on Arte. In 2022, he worked on the scripts for the latest Lucky Luke, L’Arche de Rantanplan with Achdé (Dargaud) and volume 20 of Spirou with Libon (Dupuis).
In 2023, he published La Faim de l’histoire with food critic Aïtor Alfonso (Dargaud).
Aïtor Alfonso
A former student at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon, Aïtor Alfonso teaches Hispanic literature and civilization in the literary preparatory class at the Lycée Janson de Sailly in Paris. At the same time, from 2013 onwards, he has been working as a food critic and journalist for Le Fooding, Time Out and Le Figaro vin. He also hosts the Omnivore festival stage and takes part in cooking shows with François-Régis Gaudry on France Inter.
In 2023, he and cartoonist Jul published La Faim de l’histoire (Dargaud), a fascinating illustrated essay recounting 20,000 years of history through the prism of the plate.
