Damiani, De Nobili, Tosi: Set Design and Costumes—Three Great Artists of the 20th Century

The French Academy in Rome, directed by Richard Peduzzi, kicks off the new year with a major exhibition dedicated to the work of “Luciano Damiani, Lila de Nobili, and Piero Tosi. Scenes and Costumes—Three Great Artists of the 20th Century,” curated by Gioia Fiorella Mariani, François Regnault, and Dino Trappetti. The exhibition features a wide selection of works, including set designs and costumes (sketches and originals), for each of the three sections around which the exhibition is organized (one section dedicated to Lila de Nobili, one to Piero Tosi, and finally one reserved for Luciano Damiani), will highlight the key aspects of the three artists’ work as it evolved within the history of set design in Italy during the second half of the 20th century. This ambitious project aims first and foremost to offer an overview of Italian creativity in this particular art form—all too often relegated to a specialized field—from the 1950s to the 1980s. Furthermore, by comparing and contrasting three such unique and significant figures, this exhibition aims to highlight the significant innovative contribution of their work to contemporary theater.
