Biography

Su-Mei Tse
Period: 2014-2015
Profession: Visual artist Born into a family of musicians, Su-Mei Tse lives between Luxembourg and Berlin. The approach of this visual artist explores different elements. Rhythm, sound and music, as well as questions related to language, are at the heart of her research. Her work is characterized by suspension, moments of silence and an invitation to a certain degree of introspection. Over the past ten years, she has exhibited worldwide : at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, where she won the Golden Lion for best national participation, at the Sao Paolo Biennale, at The Renaissance Society Chicago, at the Casino, Forum d’Art Contemporain in Luxembourg and at PS1 in New York, then at the Taipei Moca in Taiwan, at the Singapore Biennale, at the Miro Foundation in Barcelona, at the Art Tower Mito in Japan and at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. She is represented by Peter Blum Gallery in New York, Tschudi Gallery in Zuoz, Switzerland, AD Gallery in Athens and Eslite Gallery in Taipei. The project Su-Mei will develop during her residency at Villa Medici under the title Gewisse Rahmenbedingungen (A Certain Framework) is a play on words in the form of sculptures. It consists of several parts and invites ” to look at the world from a certain angle, to suspend one’s gaze, hold one’s breath, and give shape to a new perspective “. The artist will create wooden sculptures forming rhythmic compositions in space, using solids and voids accompanied by study drawings. A second part will be a series of blind mirrors, presented as a series of portraits whose brilliance is disappearing, like a life in the process of withering away. This project is an invitation to look afresh, to look inward.
