Pierre Nouvel
Period: 2014-2015
Profession: Set designer Pierre Nouvel is a set designer and video artist. Founder of the transdisciplinary collective Factoid, he created his first theatrical work as a video artist with Jean-François Peyret for Le Cas de Sophie K, a play premiered in Avignon in 2005. This creation initiated a series of collaborations with numerous directors (Michel Deutsch, Lars Norén, Arnaud Meunier, François Orsoni, Hubert Colas…) and led him to explore the interaction between stage space and image. This approach naturally led him to develop the scenographic dimension of his work, whether for theater, contemporary music or opera. In 2011, he and Jérôme Combier created Austerlitz, a contemporary opera adapted from the novel by W.G. Sebald, at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. His work also takes the form of installations. In 2013, he presented Walden Memories at Le Fresnoy, at the invitation of Jean-François Peyret, a project whose stage version premiered at the 2014 Avignon Festival. At Villa Medici, Pierre Nouvel’s project is to design a scenographic device capable of interpreting and reacting autonomously to body movements, following research into the materials and technologies that can be used to create so-called augmented spaces. This device, questioning our uses and relationships to space and technology, will initially take the form of an installation, then a performance based on the dialogue between body and space.
