Profession: Writer “The purpose of my novel project is to pursue a character from Russian emigration who played a major role in the European Romantic adventure, and much of it in Rome. Ever since I was born, I’ve participated in this legend by listening to it, as my grandmother was one of those white Russians. My attachment to cosmopolitan culture is reinforced by my dual Russian and French background. A graduate of Moscow University, I also hold a Master’s degree in History and Modern Literature from the Sorbonne. My thesis focused on the biographies of Russian writers who emigrated to France between the wars. These studies undoubtedly influenced the choice of subject for my novel, and modified my view of the choice of character. Even though more than a century separates the period I was studying from the one in which Princess Zenaïde Wolkonskaja lived, I see her, to the astonishment of some historians, as one of the pioneers of Russian immigration to Europe: she was the first Russian aristocrat to leave her country in 1830, rejecting the reality of slavery. In her countless letters to Tsar Nicholas I and others, now in the municipal archives of Rome, she openly criticizes his political system. Her father’s friendship with Voltaire may well have had something to do with it.
