Occupation: Plastician Marie Denis was born in Bourg-Saint-Andéol, Ardèche, in 1972. She lives in Paris and works all over the world. After studying at the ENBA in Lyon, she was a resident at the Villa Médicis in 1999. Her sculptures and installations take a wide variety of forms and techniques, borrowing from sport, garden art and the observation of everyday life. The work of artist Marie Denis is primarily concerned with objects and places, making them visible, to be taken as new, reinvented. Her work also focuses on botanical principles and in-between situations. She likes to divert rules, landmarks and know-how in order to poeticize them. Her installations, sculptures and objects are often created from raw or diverted materials, and are rooted in cultural practices. Her work lies harmoniously between the universal and the everyday. ”
My practice feeds on all the stimuli, the vivid, irrational and concrete impressions of life, which for me are like the oyster makes its pearl: an accident that produces an enchantment. It’s this alchemy that I’m always looking for. ”
