Hu Wei

Occupation: Screenwriter Hu Wei, born in Beijing in 1983, lives and works between Paris and Beijing. He trained successively in China and France, notably at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains. He has made a number of short films in a form halfway between documentary and fiction. His films have been presented and awarded at numerous international festivals, including Cannes, Sundance, AFI, Rotterdam, Chicago, New York, Clermont-Ferrand, Cinéma du Réel, Melbourne, Los Angeles, Warsaw, Sarajevo, Montreal, Milan and Hong Kong. His film La lampe au beurre de yak won the Grand Prix at the 2014 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the Grand Jury Awards at the AFI Film Festival, the Firebird Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Prix du Public at the Festival Premiers Plans d’Angers, the Grand Prix at the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, the Glasgow Film Festival Award, Best Short Film at the Golden Horse Film Festival and Best Art Film at the Go Short International Short Film Festival Nijmegen. As part of his residency at Villa Médicis, Hu Wei will be writing his first feature film, to be shot in Paris.
