Hicham Berrada
Period: 2013-2014
Profession: Plastician Born in 1986 in Casablanca, Morocco, Hicham Berrada graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (ENSBA) in 2011, then continued his research into the activation of various natural processes at the Studio national des arts contemporains, Le Fresnoy. He has taken part in several group exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Casablanca and Beirut. In February 2013, his first solo show, conceived with curator Mouna Mekouar, took place at the Palais de Tokyo as part of the Modules Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent. Hicham Berrada’s work draws on a dual artistic and scientific culture. In his work, he explores scientific protocols that imitate various natural processes and atmospheric conditions as closely as possible, in an approach close to that of a painter. His project at Villa Medici is to develop his research into elemental matter by creating multiple cosmogonies, like so many small enclosed universes, pieces of nature. This year will also see him collaborate with scientists at the Gran Sasso national laboratory, as he has already done at the Collège de France and the Pecsa laboratory in 2010, as part of the OpenLab project.
Application 17.02 - 31.03.2025
Created in 2018 by the Occitanie Region in partnership with the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici, the Price Occitanie - Medici dedicated to young contemporary creation aims to develop the international influence of talent from Occitanie by welcoming them to the Villa Medici for a research and creative stay of several months. Each year, the price attracts around a hundred candidates - visual and visual artists - eager to take advantage of the opportunity offered by a residency at one of Europe's most emblematic art centers, in contact with other artists from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. Each year, the winner of the Price Occitanie - Medici is selected on the basis of an application and an audition of the shortlisted candidates, each of whom presents his or her project to a jury made up of representatives of the Region, the Director of Villa Medici and associated experts.
