Biography

Emmanuel Carlier
Period: 2013-2014
Profession: Emmanuel Carlier was born near Paris in 1975. While studying History at the Sorbonne, he apprenticed as a violin maker in François Perrin’s workshop. A passion he was forced to abandon for a few years, during which time he became a journalist. But it was his meeting with bow-maker Gilles Duhaut that finally proved decisive. In 2005, he returned to the bench and learned bow making from the master. He then joined Maison Bernard in Brussels, where he developed his taste for antique bows and perfected his skills, particularly in restoration, with Pierre Guillaume. Since 2009, he has divided his time between Brussels and Paris, where he has opened his own workshop. In 2010, he won first prize for a viola bow and second prize for a cello bow at the International Violin and Bow Making Competition in Mittenwald, Germany. In 2011, impressed by his work, the Marcel Vatelot Foundation awarded him a grant to support the development of his workshop. In 2012, he won three gold medals at the Violin Society of America’s international competition in Cleveland, in the violin, cello and double bass categories.
