Profession: Plastician Assan Smati was born in Saint-Chamond in 1972. He lives and works in Montreuil. He holds a DNSEP ART diploma from St Etienne. He has exhibited at Galerie B. Ceysson in Paris and Luxembourg, La Verrière Hermès in Brussels and the Centre d’art Nei Liicht in Dudelange (Luxembourg). He has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions (Collection Bernard Massini, at the Fondation Maeght; MAMAC, Nice ; Galleria Pianissimo, Milan ; West Germany, Berlin). His work is equally at home in painting, sculpture and silkscreen, and expresses a disturbingly monumental and expressive aspiration. As part of his residency at Villa Medici, Assan Smati will be working on an eighteen-month painting project in which drawings will be the unit of measurement. As in his previous works, he will approach painting as sculpture, through an approach in which the two disciplines are indissolubly linked. In his work at Villa Medici, ” (…) the large canvases that outline this project today will nonetheless remain open to other subjects tomorrow. By taking on the role of a quantity of material destined for a sculpture, they aim to delimit a serene time in a place conducive to exchange. A generous time to make room for studies and longer-term work, a time when pictorial space also provides a common time for individuals. A time for sharing, for reflection, where art is an answer to the question of infinity. ”
