Biography

Antonella Fenech Kroke is an art historian, researcher at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and deputy director of the Centre André Chastel (Paris). She was a resident at the Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis, and has received scholarships from the École française de Rome and the Kunsthistorisches Institut de Florenz. In 2020, she will receive the Bourse André Chastel (INHA/Académie de France à Rome) and in 2021 (spring) she will be a fellow at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University.

His research has focused on the political and cultural dimensions of artistic and visual production in early modern Italy (Giorgio Vasari. J. Koering, forthcoming).

Since 2018, she has co-directed with F. Alberti the research project Corps troublants. Images et imaginaire dans la première modernité.

Her current research focuses, on the one hand, on visual representations of ludic practices, as well as on games, pastimes and leisure, and how they shape social practices, spaces and bodies in early modern Europe (among other articles, “Ludic Marginalities: The Other as Player in Early Modern Visual Culture”, Ludica 21-22, 2015/2016, 25-46; “Gesture and Desire in Imaginaries of Play (Early Modernity” In V. Boudier, G. Careri and E. Myara ed, L’invention du geste amoureux dans la peinture de la Renaissance, Peter Lang, 2020, p. 167-198). She is also working on a book (Corps à contresens) that deals with the modalities, functions, expressions and semantic dimension of the human body represented upside down in Western visual culture of modernity.
