Medici Residency André Chastel

with the INHA

Since 2010, the National Institute for the History of Art (INHA) and the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici have awarded two grants each year for research on art from the modern and contemporary periods.


These grants are intended for established researchers, French or foreign, who wish to travel to Rome to conduct research.

Applicants must either have held a doctorate for at least five years by the closing date of the call, or be curators or have recognized professional experience in a field of art history.

The amount of the grant is €3,000. Grant recipients are accommodated at the Villa Medici for a period of four to six weeks, either consecutively or split into stays between January 1 and December 31, 2027 (maximum of two stays).

Residency requirements

These scholarships are intended for experienced French or foreign researchers wishing to travel to Rome to carry out research.

Candidates must either have held a doctorate for at least 5 years by the closing date of the call, or be curators or have recognized professional experience in a field of art history.

 

Financial terms and conditions

The grant amounts to €3,000. Residents are housed at Villa Medici for a period of four to six weeks, consecutively or divided between January 1 and December 31 of the same 2026, with the exception of the month of August.

 

Report

Accepted candidates must submit, within three months following the end of their stay, an activity report of no more than two pages in electronic format to the General Directorate of the INHA and to the Department of Art History of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici.

Selection committee

The selection committee is composed of the Director General of the INHA, the Director of the French Academy in Rome, the Director of the Department of Studies and Research at the INHA, the Director of the Department of Art History at the French Academy in Rome, and an external expert. The committee meets once a year to select the laureates for the following year.

 

Application

Applications for the 2027 selection must be submitted via the INHA application platform, with a copy sent to the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici (by email only to [email protected] no later than June 10, 2026, before midnight).

The application file must include:

  1. A cover letter addressed to the General Directorate of the INHA and to the General Directorate of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici.
  2. A curriculum vitae.
  3. A detailed research proposal (maximum 4 pages) in French, Italian, or English, including:
    • a general presentation of the research;
    • a statement explaining the necessity of the candidate’s presence in Rome in relation to the research topic;
    • the research institutions where the documentation and archives to be consulted are located
  4. The attached information form, duly completed.
