Open call fellows annual selection

Each year, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici organizes an international competition to select fellows who will be hosted at the Villa Medici in Rome for a 12-month residency in creation, experimentation and research (residency begins in September, ends in August). The competition is open to established French-speaking artists, authors and researchers, regardless of nationality. Applications are accepted from all disciplines of literary and artistic creation, arts and crafts, as well as art history and theory, or the restoration of works of art or monuments.

Selection conditions

Before you apply

Candidates may submit only one application per competition.
Candidates must be over eighteen years of age on the closing date for applications.
Candidates must speak French, regardless of nationality. They are also advised to have some knowledge of Italian language and culture.
The selection process is aimed at people who are already working.
Applicants must submit a detailed project outlining their research topics, the nature of their work and the reasons for their stay.
Applicants may submit a group project. In this case, each person selected will receive a residency grant.
Applicants must not be former Fellows of the French Academy in Rome.

The jury

Each candidate’s file is examined by a jury made up of the following members: the Director of the French Academy in Rome, who chairs the jury; the Director General of Artistic Creation at the French Ministry of Culture or his appointed representative; and six qualified personalities appointed by decision of the Director of the Academy.

Application

Application form to be completed on the online application platform;
A copy (front and back) of the applicant’s valid identity card or passport;
A detailed curriculum vitae, written in French, outlining the applicant’s artistic background, degrees, awards and grants received, as well as publications and previous residencies;
A detailed project proposal, written in French and submitted as a PDF file of no more than 10 pages, describing the applicant’s motivation for the residency, research themes, and the work they intend to carry out during their stay;
Portfolio: artistic documentation, copies of articles, and excerpts from publications (academic or literary). Hyperlinks to publications, video or audio files, or websites may also be included. In the case of collaborative works, the applicant’s individual contribution must be clearly identified. All of these materials must be compiled into a single PDF document.

The total file size of the online application must not exceed 20 MB.
