Created in 2016 on the initiative of Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto and the Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis, ¡ Viva Villa ! invites you to discover the artists, creators and researchers in residence at the 3 institutions. It’s an opportunity for them to present their most recent works and meet the public during the inaugural weekend. For its 5th year, ¡ Viva Villa! will be hosted from October 24, 2020 to March 15, 2021 at the Collection Lambert in Avignon and will be launched during the Art Week programmed by the Festival d’Avignon.
In 2020, the festival and its exhibition Tiny Lives are curated by Cécile Debray Cécile Debraydirector of the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris and curator who has accompanied the festival since its inception. She has chosen to place it at a human level, exploring the work of the artists in residence through the prism of Pierre Michon’s novel Les vies minuscules*. Just as the artists in the three residencies did this year, the author bears witness to the current preoccupations of human beings in their everyday environments.
The works presented at the festival combine the themes of crowds, anonymity, microcosm, migration, networks, solitude, collage, montage, fragments, sewing, filiation and affect… Some of our works address the delicate issue of migratory flows from a human point of view, while others reveal the raw realism of our daily lives, offering us an intimate, subjective vision.
Around the exhibition Tiny Lives which brings together the work of some fifty artists – visual artists, musicians, graphic artists, designers, filmmakers, art historians and photographers – the festival offers a cycle of performances, concerts, readings and screenings: a series of events for a launch that powerfully expresses the full diversity of disciplines and talents.
51 artists, 21 disciplines, numerous guests, all united to give the public a lively overview of contemporary creation!
A catalog will accompany the event.
