The ¡ Viva Villa! festival was born in 2016 under the joint impetus of three French artistic residencies of international stature: the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto and Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.

Festival of artist residencies
From September 30 to October 7, 2017
Cité internationale des arts de Montmartre

The ¡ Viva Villa! 2017 brings together works by artists from the three prestigious artistic residencies, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, Villa Kujoyama and Casa de Velázquez, around the theme “Approaches“, highlighting the plurality of disciplines – visual arts, music, cinema, literature, philosophy… – viewpoints and conceptions.

The specificity of this edition lies in the choice of venue, the Norvins artistic wasteland in Montmartre, which allows us to wander from studio to studio, from grove to grassy terrace, from small square to staircase, from interior to garden, like so many close-ups then distanced, walks punctuated by successive stops on singular proposals:

photographs of interior landscapes,
an installation evocative of Charlotte Perriand’s trip to Japan,
drawings of extinct animal species,
a video installation of teenagers posing in their bedroom,
imaginary prison constructions,
a cycle of films on decolonization,
matierist photography,
an electroacoustic concert,
cardboard nymphs,
dream readings as symptoms of the crisis of our times,
a falsely burlesque performance with a sprayer,
an arc of burnt wooden paving stones among the trees,
a dance performed at the piano,
an installation about words and the moon,
a series of metaphysical still-life paintings,
counter-architectures in the garden,
an ekphrasis reading in the dark,
video poems in the interstices of the space,
paper furniture, an organ to make the cry of paper heard,
a floating sculpture,
facades anamorphosed by video…

As a counterpoint to the presentation of residents’ work in Montmartre’s studios and gardens, the ¡Viva Villa! Festival will feature debates and discussions on the issues of artistic research and creation , and of course artist residencies. The program includes meetings between residents of different residencies, whose work echoes one another. Numerous guests will take part in the debates, round tables and interviews to which the public is invited. They will be organized in a convivial atmosphere, ending with lunches and aperitifs. They will be punctuated by a program of concerts, films and performances.
