L'mina

Randa Maroufi, fellow 2025-2026

17.12.2025

The Villa Medici is pleased to present a preview screening in Rome of resident artist Randa Maroufi’s latest film, L’mina, following its acclaimed presentation at Critics’ Week in Cannes, the IDFA Festival, and Lo Schermo dell’Arte in Florence, where a retrospective of her filmography was held.

L’mina will be screened alongside films by Yuyan Wang and Hicham Gardaf, which explore resilience in the face of economic and technological forces. In Praise of Slowness (Hicham Gardaf, 17 min, 2024) examines the impact of rapid urbanization in Tangier and the forms of resistance embodied by local choreographies of slowness. All Movements Should Kill the Wind (Yuyan Wang, 12 min, 2019) portrays workers shaping their environment in a sculpture factory in China, where repetitive movements become a story of degradation and repair.

Synopsis

Jerada is a mining town in Morocco where coal mining, although officially halted in 2001, continues informally to this day. “L’mina” recreates current work in the pits, using a set designed in collaboration with the town’s inhabitants, who act out their own roles.

Praise of Slowness, Hicham Gardaf

Faced with global economic and technological forces reshaping the city of Tangier, the profession of bleach sellers seems to be disappearing. Yet this filmed portrait of their supply chain—and in particular their insistent chants—conveys acoustic and visual images of perseverance. In Praise of Slowness evokes the accelerated urbanization and industrialization of Tangier, but also bears witness to how local choreographies of slowness articulate modes of resistance to the speed of capitalism.

All movements should kill the wind, Yuyan WANG

Two hundred kilometers from Beijing, men live among rocks waiting to be broken, cut, sanded. The same gestures are repeated over and over again, writing a story of
deterioration and repair. This story is erased in the making of monuments. With the wind inexorably scattering the traces of these actions.
