Three hundred and fifty years ago, in January 1674, Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674) died in Rome, one of the greatest composers of the 17th century, described by his contemporary Athanasius Kircher as “Master of musical Europe”. Carissimi was particularly renowned for his oratorios in Latin, dramatic and musical compositions with a religious theme. His most famous works include Jephte, Jonas, Judicium Salomonis and many others. To celebrate his greatness, Villa Medici will host a concert as part of the I Borghese e la Musica project, promoted by the Galleria Borghese. The event will feature Historia di Jephte, considered his masterpiece, composed around 1649. The Oratorio recounts the story of Jephthah, leader of the Israelites, who, to secure victory over the Ammonites, vows to sacrifice to God the first living creature that comes to meet him after his victory. As he runs to celebrate, it is his only daughter who presents herself to him, and the joy of triumph is suddenly transformed into tragedy. The great dramatic page of the Lamento della Filia has remained a symbol of this early Baroque rhetoric and musical writing, which was synthesized in the Teoria degli Affetti. The concert opens with two choral pieces performed by the Musicanova choir.
