Studiolo #22

Francis Alÿs, Paradox of Praxis I (Sometimes Making Something Leads to Nothing), Mexico City, 1997, video.

This issue’s thematic dossier of the art history journal Studiolo explores the theme of heterochronies – the multiple temporalities that traverse artworks, practices, and the narratives of art history. In a world where historical, cultural, and technological rhythms intertwine without ever truly synchronizing, the issue invites readers to question the gaps, frictions, and overlaps that transform the way we interpret the time of the arts.

About Studiolo

Published by the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, Studiolo is an annual art history journal dedicated to European and international artistic production and exchanges in the modern and contemporary ages. It provides a forum for the latest research in art history, both in terms of subjects and methods.

Each issue consists of a thematic dossier and several sections: the Varia section, open to off-theme articles; Débats, devoted to historiography; Villa Médicis, histoire et patrimoine, dedicated to the history of the French Academy in Rome, as well as to research activities, and restoration projects monitored by the Department of Art History; and finally Champ libre, which welcomes proposals from the current year’s fellows.
