As part of a project supported by the École française de Rome, Carracci ConservArt. Visualize and understand the Carracci Gallery through its critical fortunes, conservation and restorations. (17th – 21st century) which aims to analyze various aspects of the conservation and restoration of the Galerie des Carrache at the École française de Rome, the art history research workshop W ROMA. Collection des inscriptions exposées non-officielles. will take place from April 18 to 20, and aims to nurture a future publication on graffiti in Rome.

The research workshop W ROMA. Collecting unofficial exhibited inscriptions. aims to initiate reflection on a forthcoming publication devoted to the numerous graffiti uncovered beneath the layers of whitewash, notably during the latest restoration campaign in the Gallerie des Carrache.

During this workshop, presentations on graffiti will be complemented by practical work on the various techniques for recording and transcribing graffiti (graffiti present in the Galleria dei Carrara, the Villa Farnesina, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum or the Foro italico…).

The workshop will take place in Rome, a city historically considered a “written city”, where official writing spaces have been particularly well thought-out and organized, and where freer forms of inscription have emerged in response.

The workshop is organized by Francesca Alberti, Coline Sunier & Charles Mazé, and Thomas Huot-Marchand, in partnership with theAtelier National de Recherche Typographique de Nancy and theInstitut Supérieur des arts de Toulouse (ISDAT).
