V edition of #NuitBlanche at Villa Medici
Ask for night
Curated by Saverio Verini
Nuit Blanche returns to Villa Medici on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 7:45pm to 11:30pm! The fifth edition of the event features 16 artists from the Académie de France in Rome, in residence at Villa Medici from September 2020 to August 2021.
Visual artists, writers, composers, visual artists, art historians, architects: all the fellows have been invited by curator Saverio Verini to present a selection of visual or sound works, installations, performances or projections. Over the course of an evening, the works are exhibited in the Médicéan gardens and in certain preserved areas of the Villa not usually accessible to the public (artist’s studio, fellows’ lounge, ceremonial rooms), in an original itinerary that reflects the dialogue between artistic languages and their interaction with these places steeped in history(s). The event offers the public the chance to explore the Villa Medici in its most intimate and secluded corners: a few unusual hours in contact with the creations of the fellows before they disappear into the darkness.
The Nuit Blanche is an exceptional event that also highlights the three fundamental missions of the Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis: welcoming artists and researchers in residence, staging a multidisciplinary artistic program, and promoting the Villa’s architectural and landscape heritage.
The title of this year’s Nuit Blanche, Demande à la nuit, is an invitation to the public. Visitors are invited to come face to face with the expectations and desires nourished by contact with the works. The chosen theme also invites fellows to reflect on the representation of individual poetics. It’s a kind of “challenge” for Villa Medici’s new guests, who throughout the year will be giving shape to their research in conditions and in a place hitherto unknown to them. The Nuit Blanche is both a first public presentation of their work in Rome and a promise for the rest of the residency.
Saverio Verini curates exhibitions, festivals and meetings linked to contemporary art and culture. He collaborates with institutions such as Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci, MACRO, Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis, American Academy in Rome, Fondazione Ermanno Casoli, Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Istituto Polacco di Roma, and Fondazione Civitella Ranieri. He currently coordinates exhibitions for the Memmo Foundation in Rome.
