Thierry Mouillé
Period: 2007-2008
Profession: Plastician Since 1988, Thierry Mouillé has grouped together all his work under the name of Fondation Mouvante, an artistic, economic and political entity whose paradoxical name immediately reveals the artist’s position and reflects, not a utopian vision, but the lucid humanism that motivates his artistic practice. Driven by the principles of flow and exchange that govern the body, architecture, the economy and information, his works always raise the possibility, however slight, of bending reality in the direction of a more humane world. Under this generic title, T.M. has never ceased to try and break down the traditional opposition between the static and the dynamic. An impossible movement perhaps, that of “building on shifting sands”, a utopian place too, of a repertoire of anti-monuments… Earlier volumes of work showed landslides, objects traversed by waves, spectral and ghostly presences, the project to divert a river and also vain or unsupported movements, pieces that skid, sag or collapse in a quest to experiment with heterogeneous thought forms. In his installations, T.M. uses everyday objects, furniture and mechanical devices, giving the whole a playful yet derisory aspect. This burlesque character soon becomes suspicious and disturbing. Sports trophies abandoned to junk dealers, boneless furniture, outdated conventions and official paintings are not so insignificant. The theme of territory makes us realize that the amiable cartography of the world conceals the perilous contradictions of geopolitics.
