Biography

Leilei Tian

Profession: Composer Leilei Tian was born in China in 1971. She began studying piano at the age of six. From 1988 to 1995, she studied composition at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, graduating with a Master’s degree. In 1997, she moved to Sweden to study at the Göteborg Conservatory of Music, where she received her Advanced Diploma in 2001. She takes part in summer courses at Darmstadt, the Centre Acanthes, “Voix Nouvelles” at Royaumont, La Rencontre Internationale des Jeunes Compositeurs in Apeldoorn, summer courses at IRCAM and the Academie “Avantgarde Schwaz” in Austria. She studied with Brian Ferneyhough, Salvatore Sciarrino, Gerard Grisey, Louis Andriessen and Boguslaw Schaeffer. From 2002 to 2003, she studied composition and computer music at Ircam, working with Philippe Leroux, Jonathan Harvey, Tristan Murail, Brian Ferneyhough, Philippe Manoury and Philippe Hurel. Since then, she has settled in Paris. She receives commissions from music institutions, festivals and ensembles, and her music is well received internationally. Her works have been performed by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Göteborg National Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, the Orchestre de Strasbourg, the Serbian Radio and Television Orchestra, the Hong Kong Orchestra, the Beijing Orchestra, the Ensemble Intercontemporain de Paris, Les Jeunes Solistes de Paris, l’Orchestre de la Radio Télévision Serbe, l’Orchestre de Hongkong, l’Orchestre de Beijing and many others.

Ensemble Intégrales de Hamburg, Ensemble Zagros de Helsinki, Nouvelle Ensemble Moderne de Montréal, Ensemble Earplay de San Francisco etc. in festivals such as ISCM World Music Days, Festival Agora in Paris, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), La Biennale de Venise, Festival Printemps des Arts de Monaco, Stravinsky Festival in Arhnem (Netherlands), Heidelberger Frühling International Music Festival (Germany), Festival ‘Rainbow day’ in Luxembourg, Nordic Music Days, Stockholm New Musik, Asian Music Festival in Japan, etc. Her compositions are also broadcast on radio, CD and the Internet. She is the winner of several prestigious international competitions, including the Besançon Competition for orchestras in France (1st prize), the “Citta ‘di Udine” Competition in Italy (1st prize), the GRAME Competition in Lyon (1st prize), the Gaudeamus Competition in Amsterdam and the ISCM Cash Young Composer’s Award.
