Laurent Durupt is currently completing the cursus 2 at IRCAM, and performs solo and in duo with his brother Rémi, a percussionist (duo Links), and teaches piano at the 14 th arrondissement conservatory. His works have been performed in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, London, Valencia, Bogota, Vitoria, Chelsea, Manchester, Saint Petersburg, Vancouver, Dallas, San Antonio and New York. Commenting on his residency at Villa Medici, he says: “My residency project is the realization of a cycle of three scores for a capella choir, in which I wish to explore the expressive possibilities of the voice, with, from one score to the next, variations on the degree of mechanicity, a central notion in my work. The texts are by European poets (Paul Celan, René Char and Giuseppe Ungaretti), and induce a variety of musical treatments, while the central theme of the cycle will be that of breath. The content of the texts interacts with the respective aesthetics of three artists who inspire me daily: Gerhard Richter, Mark Rothko and Giuseppe Penone. What’s important to me is the resonance that each brings to the corresponding text, as well as the related images that their universe adds to the perception of the music, and vice versa.”
