Lecture by Isabelle Paresys

Supplied by Royal Collection Trust

Thursday June 3 at 7:00 pm, art historian and Villa Médicis resident Gaylord Brouhot invites Isabelle Paresys to present the culmination of a Université de Lille SHS/CNRS research project aimed at creating a digital reconstruction of the Camp du Drap d’or. This event will provide an opportunity to examine the fruitful links between historical research and technology, as well as the issues underlying the work of reconstituting and representing highly symbolic historical events.

“Le Camp du Drap d’or numérique” is a 3D reconstruction of the infrastructure of the camps built in northern France by Kings Francis I and Henry VIII of England in June 1520. This diplomatic meeting gave rise to a great display of magnificence, with each court seeking to impress the other. Our program focuses on the ephemeral infrastructure of this “luxury campsite”. What might they have looked like? What does historical documentation have to say? And how can we use digital images to recreate all these facilities and their materials, such as the gold sheets imported from Italy at the time?

Free event (limited seating, doors open at 6.30pm, event at 7pm).
Advance booking required (please remember to cancel your Eventbrite reservation if you no longer wish to take part, so that we can offer other people the chance to attend the event).

Isabelle Paresys is a senior lecturer in history and a member of IRHiS, Institut de recherches historiques du Septentrion/CNRS. She coordinates the digital restitution program for the Camp du Drap d’or, a pilot project of the I-Site Université de Lille Nord-Europe and the Sciences & Cultures du visuel research federation. Her work focuses on material culture in the late Renaissance, particularly fashion and clothing, and their appropriation in historical films. This dual expertise has led her to curate exhibitions ( A feast for the eyes! The fashion show 2013; Costumer la Renaissance à l’écran, 2021), and even designed show costumes (Marignan 1515-2015). Her main publications include Paraître et apparences dans l’histoire (2008), Se vêtir à la cour en Europe (2011). She has recently contributed to A Cutural History of Dress and Fashion (2017), Sartorial Politics in Early Modern Europe: Fashioning Women (2019) and Reenactment / reconstitution: remaking or thwarting history? (2021)
