Celebrations of the third centenary of Alessandro Scarlatti’s death provide an opportunity for a new performance of the Oratorio La Giuditta, known as the “Cambridge Oratorio,” by the Cappella Musicale of Villa Medici.
Judith, the eponymous heroine, establishes herself as a biblical figure through an act that is as tragic as it is emancipatory. She beheads Holofernes, a tyrannical general, and frees her people from destruction. Today considered a symbolic figure of female rebellion against patriarchal oppression, she embodies strength and courage, which the Cappella Musicale of Villa Medici intends to highlight by expanding the narrative possibilities of the Oratorio. This contemporary adaptation reinterprets the role of the chorus and dancers in the ancient tragedies, allowing the story of Judith to continue to resonate today.
