Young residents
December 2024 saw the first edition of the Rebonds program, co-constructed by the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, the Direction interrégionale de la protection judiciaire de la jeunesse (DIRPJJ) Sud-Est Corse and the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles (DRAC) Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Designed specifically for minors in the care of the Protection Judiciaire de la Jeunesse (PJJ), this experimental educational program aims to encourage the social integration of young people through access to the arts and culture. The young people entrusted to the PJJ often come from difficult family or social backgrounds, and face a variety of realities: some are in a situation of great isolation, others have a history of delinquency and may have been subject to legal sanctions, and many come from the child welfare system and have experienced great family difficulties or violence from an early age. The Rebonds program at Villa Médicis is part of a pedagogical approach that aims to forge links with these young people by welcoming them for a week in a unique and stimulating setting. Active participation in a program of meetings, activities and workshops is an integral part of this approach.
During the four months preceding the residency, the young people work on the production of a collective work in the artistic discipline of their choice (photography, dance, music, painting…). To achieve this, they are accompanied by local cultural structures and associate artists.
The young people are welcomed to Villa Medici in Rome, along with their educators and associate artists, for a week-long residency that marks the culmination of their work. The program includes workshops, conferences, visits and the presentation of their projects. Active listening, public speaking and team spirit are at the heart of this residency.
As part of the remit of the Ministry of Justice, the Direction de la Protection Judiciaire de la Jeunesse (Youth Judicial Protection Department) is responsible for all matters relating to juvenile justice, and for coordinating the various institutions involved. The department offers a wide range of complementary services, tailored to the profile and needs of each juvenile. Open care is provided in the young person’s usual living environment, with the help of professionals (educators, psychologists, social workers). The PJJ also guarantees the execution of placement measures ordered by magistrates when it is no longer possible to keep the minor in his or her usual environment. The PJJ therefore has a number of integration schemes designed to support young people’s integration and, where necessary, to organize in-house training to help them acquire social, academic and professional skills, and ultimately to reintegrate them into the mainstream labour market.
The Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles, a decentralized department of the French Ministry of Culture, works to serve all the inhabitants of the PACA region, wherever they live and at all stages of their lives. The department continues to work closely with other government departments, notably through the regional implementation of inter-ministerial agreements. Certain partnerships have been strengthened, notably in the fields of early childhood and education, health and justice.
