Biography

Younès Ben Slimane is an architect, artist and filmmaker who graduated from Le Fresnoy in 2022. Working through moving and still images, drawing and volumes, he establishes an ongoing dialogue between architecture and the visual arts, where different media coexist and reflect their respective potentialities and limits. He has taken part in a number of contemporary art events, including Documenta fifteen Mobile Lab (DE). His work has been shown at Kadist in Paris (FR), Mucem in Marseille (FR) and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje (MK). His films have been selected for festivals such as the Locarno Film Festival, CPH:DOX and DokuFest.

Project

“We sculpt our gods in our own image, just as the potters of Sejnane sculpt their clay by channeling their inner goddesses.” By immersing himself in the history of the city of Rome, Younès Ben Slimane hopes to gain an understanding of the evolution of object representations through time, in order to better grasp the symbolic and cultural significance of the Paleolithic Venuses he examines in his film project. For his aesthetic research, he will draw on the pictorial techniques of chiaroscuro and tenebrism, and examine the depictions of sacrifice and blood in Caravaggio’s paintings.
