Musical composition
Sonia Wieder-Atherton (1961, USA) explores music as a universal language. Born in San Francisco, she grew up in New York and then Paris, studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur with Maurice Gendron, then in Moscow with Natalia Shakhovskaya. She has collaborated with many contemporary composers, performing as soloist with orchestra and in chamber music. Her repertoire includes numerous works, and she has created shows with Chantal Akerman, Charlotte Rampling and Clément Cogitore. In 2020, she published 6 suites by J.S. Bach. She played for the tribute to Simone Veil at the Panthéon in 2018.
The residency project will involve defining the thread of the sound installation from hundreds of hours of recordings. Inventing a sound journey for the audience through the work, based on the voices of women from Kinshasa, Algeria, Lille and Kabul, blending with Sonia Wieder-Atherton’s cello and a soundtrack. Will it be a single journey with multiple encounters that respond to each other, or will it be a series of “islets” allowing us to deepen our encounters with a group of women or with a single woman?
