Medici Residency with the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation

Arts and crafts

Biography

Naïs Campedel (1993) is an architect and craftswoman. She trained at the Ecole d’architecture de Versailles and the Cité internationale de la tapisserie d’Aubusson. She founded Atelier Tras, a cross-disciplinary studio born of a desire to bring architecture, domestic space and art objects into dialogue. The studio works on architecture, design and ennoblement projects. This cross-disciplinary approach has led the studio to work with tapestry as a material to be sculpted. It is no longer a support for pictorial representation, but a material that summons texture, light and density to reveal and sublimate our interiors. Her project at Villa Medici
This residency project is a continuation of her research into the weaving techniques used by weavers in past centuries. This research will be carried out by going back and forth between the analysis of tapestries at Villa Medici and practical weaving. The aim of this research is to unravel and understand the gestures used by the craftsmen of the time to obtain the desired technical results (relays, removals, embossing of fabrics, etc.). Some of these techniques are unused and perhaps even unknown to contemporary weavers. The intention is to reintegrate these technical languages into contemporary textile practices.
