Marie-Christine Statz

German designer Marie-Christine Statz spent seven years in New York, where she graduated from Parsons School of Design and worked at Narciso Rodriguez and Diane von Furstenberg. Based in Paris since 2011, she specialized in the art of tailoring at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. In 2013, she founded GAUCHERE and has since led its creative direction, combining precise cuts, minimalism and a subversive vision of modern femininity. Her collections have been part of the official Paris Fashion Week calendar since 2015. Her collaborations with Camille Henrot, Miren Arzalluz and Benjamin Millepied, among others, create a dialogue between fashion, contemporary art and the performing arts.

Deeply rooted in the art of tailoring, Marie-Christine Statz’s practice is a constant exploration of the concepts of contrast, tension, and harmony. Each piece is designed in constant dialogue with the body and movement. During this residency at Villa Medici, Statz hopes to deepen this exploration by examining the body and movement through the lens of transformation. Her intention is to study garments activated by movement—pieces that evolve in response to gesture, shifts in posture, and the interaction between the body and fabric.
