Comic strip
Julie Michelin (France, 1990) is a comic strip author and illustrator. A graduate of the École Européenne Supérieure de l’Image in Angoulême and the Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Strasbourg, she lives and works between Brittany and Paris. Sensitive to environmental, social and societal issues, she borrows from reality to fuel her fictions, recounting adventures in which the living takes many forms. Her first graphic novel, Eksploracja, will be published in 2021 by L’Employé du Moi. Involved in various multidisciplinary collectives such as F.Off, Curry Vavart and Fanzine! Festival, she enjoys taking part in publishing, visual and sound arts events.
In residence at Villa Médicis, Julie Michelin will be developing her comic strip project Là où la graine prend, an ecological and societal tale about our relationship with animality, nature and the seasons, as seen through the eyes of a group of teenagers preparing for carnival! It’s the story of a town that’s changing, of friendships that are born or evolve, and of a form of authority that takes precedence over everything else.
with the Cité de la la bande dessinée et de l'image and the ADAGP
Comics and graphic literature have enjoyed a remarkable boom since the 90s, with a proliferation of aesthetics and sub-genres. The 9th art also feeds into several other disciplines, including cinema, video games, animation and virtual images. The French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici, the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image and the Société des Auteurs dans les Arts graphiques et plastiques (ADAGP), have decided to support this vitality and accompany the careers of singular authors to encourage their visibility, while creating opportunities for encounters with artists from other disciplines and new audiences.
