Medici Residency with the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation
Arts and crafts
FOUR is a Paris-based design and ceramics studio founded in 2020 by Sonia Oet and Jeanne Viviès. Its ambition is to explore the table differently, bringing objects into dialogue with its culinary inspirations, at the crossroads of design, craft and gastronomy. FOUR projects explore the relationship between content and container, proposing a new approach to the table as a means of aesthetic expression. Designed to inspire the imagination as much as to serve, the ceramics not only suggest their use, but also open up a dialogue between the plate and its surroundings, making the art of the table an essential component of the gastronomic experience.
FOUR is proposing the creation of a collection of ceramic tableware specially designed for the Villa Medici, in resonance with its architecture and history. Working from prints of the ornaments on the building’s facade, we will reinterpret the Italo-Renaissance forms and Roman relics that decorate the façade. The pieces, plates and serving dishes, will combine structural simplicity and decorative richness. Their work explores the dialogue between ancient and contemporary, rational and irrational, container and content, and seems to us to reflect perfectly the duality characteristic of the Villa.
