Biography

Caroline Déodat

(1987) is an artist, filmmaker and researcher. With a doctorate in anthropology from the EHESS, she trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in the Art post-graduate program. Through films and installations, she explores the spectral dimensions of the moving image, moving between fiction and ethnography, theory and documentary cinema. From her obsessions with processes of archiving and alienation, history and the myths of violence, she seeks ways to recompose narratives and weave silenced genealogies through the summoning of haunted memories, deferred archives and oral images. Project

She will develop a film and installation project on the ancestral myths of Rome. Starting with Western projective images of ancient Rome, her investigation will focus on Roman law and the poetics of the Aeneid, which she will confront with the political fictions of contemporary identity rituals (cinema, tourism and law). Blending fiction and experimental ethnography, peplum archives and documentary cinema, this work will unfold a speculative history of métissage and question contemporary legacies of the figure of Aeneas. Are we the heirs of this foreigner who, after his journey across the Mediterranean, became one of Rome’s founding heroes?
