Poetry Day: readings by René Daumal

27.10.2022

G05531-DAUMAL-COUV-3008 recoupé

As part of Patti Smith Poetry Day organized by the Centre Pompidou, the Académie de France in Rome presents an evening dedicated to the poet René Daumal (1908-1944).

The work of New York singer-songwriter, poet and painter Patti Smith is heavily influenced by poetic writing, and René Daumal is one of her favorite authors.

Boris Bergmannwriter and former Villa Médicis resident, will present the Gallimard edition of Daumal’s novel Le Mont Analogue, with a preface by Patti Smith. This cult book, written between 1939 and 1944, was left unfinished, but remains a reference for a whole generation of creators and artists, from Roberto Calasso to Franco Battiato.

This presentation will be followed by a reading of Daumal’s texts, plunging us into the very heart of the poet’s voice. Roman artist Cosima Bucarelli and Boris Bergmann will perform this text in Italian and French.

Boris Bergmann

Boris Bergmann was born in Paris in 1992. A former Villa Médicis resident in 2017-2018, he has published five novels.

At the age of 15, he published his first book, Viens là que je te tue ma belle (éditions Scali), which won the Prix de Flore du lycéen in 2007. Meanwhile, Boris Bergmann published his second novel, 1000 Mensonges (éditions Denoël), in January 2010. After several years of literary studies, readings at the Fondation Cartier and publications in various magazines, Boris Bergmann returned with his third novel, Déserteur (éditions Calmann Lévy) in September 2016. His latest, Les Corps insurgés (éditions Calmann-Lévy, September 2020), was awarded the Prix Félix Fénéon.

He is co-curator of the Monts analogues exhibition at FRAC Champagne Ardenne (September 17-December 23, 2021), which brings together archive pieces and works by artists inspired by René Daumal and the novel of the same name. He edited the new edition of the novel Le Mont Analogue, published in October 2021 by Gallimard.

Cosima Bucarelli is a multidisciplinary Roman artist whose work includes jewelry, sculptures, performances, videos, installations, drawings and paintings.

She started out as a writer, in Italy for Anna magazine and in Germany for Welt-Am-Sonntag, before co-founding and directing #Horst und Edeltraut magazine from 2009 to 2015.

She studied jewelry-making, in Italy and Thailand, and began experimenting with material and movement through the function and form of jewelry. In 2017, her creations were selected by W Magazine as part of “the new guard of young designers”.

After completing her art studies under Sergio Sarra and assisting artist Rolf Sachs in Rome, Cosima Bucarelli devoted herself to her creations in her studio in the Tuscan countryside.
