Les Chantiers des Carrache symposium takes place over two days, at Villa Medici and the École française de Rome.

The symposium Les Chantiers des Carrache is the first public meeting organized by the steering committee of the research project “ Carracci ConservArt: visualizing and understanding the Galerie des Carrache through its critical fortune, conservation and restoration. XVIIth-XXIst centuries “.

The Carracci Gallery in the Palazzo Farnese was created between 1597 and 1608 by the brothers Annibal and Augustin Carracci, representatives of the new classicism of the 16th century. Frescoes depicting characters from Ovid’s Metamorphoses decorate this magnificent 20-metre vault which, between optical games and perspectives, spans sculpture, painting and architecture in a triumph of light, shapes and colors that has amazed and fascinated observers for over 400 years.

Launched in 2022, in partnership with several institutions, the Carracci ConservArt research project aims to analyze and publish unpublished data from the restoration of the Galerie dei Carracci in the Palazzo Farnese, which took place in 2015; crossing technical and scientific results with historical-critical research carried out on the work, and complementing them with a study of the graffiti found in the Galerie during this restoration. These grafitti will be the subject of a colloquium open to the public in April 2023, at Villa Medici.

The research workshop on November 8, closed to the public, at the Académie de France – Villa Médicis is intended to bring together all the members and research groups involved in the Carracci ConservArt project.

This meeting will be followed by a study day open to the public on November 9, at the École française de Rome. Dedicated to the Chantiers des Carrache, this day will provide an opportunity to present the studies and research devoted to the question of Carracci’s technique of execution, in the major building sites outside Rome.
