Villa Medici welcomes the great historian and archaeologist Alain Schnapp for a public lecture on Piranesi’s representations of ruins as part of the colloquium Piranesi @300 organized by the Academy’s Department of Art History in collaboration with the Centro Studi Cultura e Immagine di Roma/Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica and the British School at Rome.
Alain Schnapp is Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Paris I and researcher at the Maison de l’archéologie et de l’ethnologie Paris I/ Paris Ouest/ CNRS. His work focuses on the archaeology of Greek cities, iconography and the history of archaeology. He has taught at numerous European and American universities and was the first Director General of the INHA.
He is the author of numerous publications, including Une Histoire universelle des ruines, published in 2020 by Editions du Seuil.
