“This is the power of fiction: to tell the story of reality by displacing it, even surpassing it, so as to be able to talk about it more effectively” – Anne Paulicevich.

Filles de Joie (Daughters of Joy) was released in 2020 and deals, in the words of the director and screenwriter, with “the heroism of women”. After months of immersion in the world of prostitution, Anne Paulicevich wrote Filles de Joie, which marks her directorial debut alongside Frédéric Fonteyne.

This film tells the story of Axelle, Dominique and Conso and their double lives once they cross the border, when they become Athena, Circe and Hera in their brothel. It describes their personal struggles and the birth of their solidarity in the face of adversity. Resolutely political and committed, this film questions the geographical, social and emotional boundaries linked to the complex issue of prostitution, and sheds light on the daily life of a forgotten minority.

Filles de Joie premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and, after traveling to several other festivals, was chosen to represent Belgium at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2020.

This screening will take place as part of the residency ofAnne Paulicevich and Frédéric Fonteyne. They are currently working on their next feature film, A Man Of The World, to be shot in Rome and Florence. Anne Paulicevich and Frédéric Fonteyne will be at Villa Medici twice, from January 23 to 30 and March 6 to 12.
