The Roman Cistern, with its irregular walls of warm, earthy colors, becomes the ideal backdrop for Transbarroco (2014), the video installation by Adriana Varejão (Rio de Janeiro, 1964; lives and works in Rio de Janeiro). The work focuses on the history, culture and civilization of Brazil, where the artist was born. Using a system of wide shots, she presents images of some of the masterpieces of the Brazilian Baroque: the churches of São Francisco in Salvador de Bahia, of the Tertiary Order of São Francisco in Rio de Janeiro, of São Francisco de Assis in Ouro Preto and the cathedral of Mariana, while the background music resounds with the notes of the Candomblé ritual, occasionally combined with the reading of some traditional Brazilian texts.
