The possible relationship between tradition and contemporaneity, past and present, in today’s cultural and social context is central to the research of Achraf Touloub (born in Casablanca in 1986, he lives and works in Paris). His graphic, plastic and video experiments are proof of this: they succeed in balancing tradition and modernity, manual skill and technology. This is particularly true of the works on paper selected for his intervention at Villa Medici, his first solo exhibition at a public institution in Italy. These are drawings and watercolors – sometimes featuring a human figure, which is very rare in his repertoire – presented in the Cardinal’s Chambers within the original decorations as if they had always been part of them.
