Art Club #25 Cyprien Gaillard

Cyprien Gaillard (Paris, 1980; lives and works in Berlin) uses a structured linguistic system to examine the concept of ruin as a universal metaphor for man’s social and cultural condition. His visionary creations blend the past with the present, history with current affairs, nature with architecture, creating an original form of expression. For the first time at Villa Medici, Cyprien Gaillard presents the performance Compliment or Concern (2018). Placed in the Roman cistern and performed by the artist himself, for two hours the action punctuates the projection on the wall of over 3,000 shots (black-and-white urban nocturnes dated between 2009 and 2018 on high-velocity film) following the sounds produced by percussionist Edoardo Ponticelli.
