Marinella Senatore is one of the great protagonists of the international creative scene, particularly in the performative arts. In 2014, she won the MAXXI Prize with her installation The School of Narrative Dance – Roma, featuring dances, choirs, gymnastic exercises, marching bands and street actors. Her practice is characterized by audience participation in the work, thereby creating a dialogue between history, culture and social structures that allows us to reflect on the role of artist/author and audience/spectator. At Villa Medici, she is presenting an original body of work, reflecting her polyhedral activity in relation to the context in which she works.
Protest Forms: Memory and Celebration(featuring Giacomo Leopardi) (2018), the work created by Marinella Senatore (Cava dei Tirreni, 1977; lives and works in Paris and Rome) for Villa Medici, revolves around the idea of narrative, in which the artist sees an experiment enabling her to explore a multiplicity of forms that illustrate protest and concretize allegorical ceremonies inspired by concepts of union, affiliation, awareness and belonging. Taking place in the gardens of the Academy, the forty-minute performance features a host of performers from a variety of disciplines, from dj sets to dance, from sport to social activism. Exceptionally, the work will be preceded by a reflection on anti-fascism and anti-totalitarianism, during which excerpts from poems by Giacomo Leopardi will be read. The School of Narrative Dance Roma, founded by Marinella Senatore in 2013, will make a special intervention during the performance.
