Adrian Ghenie (Baia, 1977; lives and works in Berlin) is one of the most refined and sensitive painters of his generation. He represented Romania at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015). His pictorial research is rooted in characters and events drawn from the media; he mixes the past with the present, classical culture with that of everyday life. For Villa Medici, he presents a series of works inspired by its history and specifically created for the Cardinal’s Rooms. These include paintings and collages based on Vincent Van Gogh, elected for the occasion as the emblem of his reflections on the themes of creation and authoriality in today’s expressive context.
