Festival des Cabanes of Villa Medici 2027

Lorenza Pensa

The French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici opens its architectural competition to select projects for the sixth edition of its Festival des Cabanes, to be held from May to September 2027 in its historic gardens !

The competition is open to French and foreign architects, artists, designers and landscape architects of all ages and nationalities.

Since its inception, the Festival des Cabanes of Villa Medici has been committed to fostering and promoting the vitality of contemporary creation, and its mission is to present original, ephemeral works by architects, artists, designers and landscape architects as part of a major summer event.

A veritable laboratory for the creation of contemporary microarchitectures, each edition of the Festival des Cabanes presents cabanes (huts), prototypes and architectures that question the challenges of habitat and develop an ecological and environmental conscience. The cabanes selected at the end of the international competition will be exhibited in the historic quadrati of the The French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, a historic setting blending a rich heritage of trees and incredible biodiversity.

Displayed in the open air for five months, these structures, which are made of materials that are often reused or part of an eco-responsible approach, offer the public a renewed experience of the gardens of the Villa Medici and invite visitors to rethink the question of the modular and sustainable habitat, as well as that of our relationship with nature. Through the utopia of the cabane, the collectives, agencies and studios adopt an approach that is sensitive to contemporary architectural and environmental issues and take up the challenge of designing projects intimately linked to the historical heritage of Villa Medici.
