Villa Medici houses some of the documents produced by the French Academy in Rome. Most of the archives produced by the Académie before it moved to Villa Medici in 1803 were destroyed when the Palazzo Mancini was sacked in 1793. The salvaged documents are now kept at the Archives nationales in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine (France). The public archives, which retrace the institution’s history from 1793 to 1961, are classified by directorate. Starting with the Balthus directorship (1961-1977), the documents are classified according to the missions entrusted by successive decrees to the French Academy in Rome. The archives include :
The holdings are of all kinds: manuscripts, photographs, plans and digital data. Initiated in 2015, the gradual transfer of the Academy’s historical archives to the National Archives is continuing.
The Académie’s archival documents produced up to 1903 are freely communicable (may be consulted and distributed without restriction). The Académie’s archival documents produced after 1903 may be subject to communicability deadlines (Code du patrimoine, art. 213-1 to 8).
It is possible to reproduce certain Villa Medici archives. Readers may use a camera without a flash to take photographs of the documents they are consulting, while respecting the conservation of the documents. Documents that are too fragile, or those requiring a special dispensation, may not be reproduced. In compliance with the French Intellectual Property Code, readers must check that documents are free of economic rights and observe moral rights, as well as “associated rights” where applicable. If there is any doubt as to the author’s status or current rights, it is the reader’s responsibility to find out who holds the rights.
On-line consultation: The Académie’s archives have been deposited with the Archives nationales (Pierrefitte-sur-Seine site) and can be consulted at the following address: link.
On-site consultation: Archives that have not yet been deposited with the Archives nationales can be consulted at the Villa Médicis by appointment. Each year, Villa Medici reinforces its commitment to social and environmental responsibility (SER) in all its activities: exhibition production, event programming, resident care and support functions. Villa Medici is committed to making culture a factor in professional integration, thanks in particular to its residency programs for young people (Résidences pro, Résidences de découverte with the Fondation Culture & Diversité) and its proactive policy of welcoming young audiences. It is also part of a global approach to social responsibility, which includes the development of an action plan to combat all forms of violence and harassment of a sexist or sexual nature within all its communities. On the environmental front, Villa Medici is committed to a process of ecological transition to reduce the establishment’s environmental impact. Actions implemented include waste management, in particular that produced by exhibition scenography, resource conservation, the environmental impact of digital uses, transport issues and the energy performance of the establishment.
The main challenges facing the management of Villa Medici’s historic gardens are the conservation of its tree heritage, the preservation of biodiversity and the regeneration of historic species. More specifically, Villa Medici has a dual objective: to preserve the historic species present on its site (umbrella pines, holm oaks, elms) and to reintroduce certain species that have disappeared (boxwood, laurel, pistachio, acanthus, myrtle). To combat disease and insect pests, Villa Medici has introduced natural products and beneficial insects to replace all chemical products. The 300 citrus trees in the Villa Médicis gardens are the subject of a made-to-measure project. Planted in the 16th century by Ferdinand de’ Medici, the orange, lemon, sour orange and citron trees are tended by gardeners and citrus growers committed to the establishment. Since 2023, Villa Medici has embarked on a project to enhance the value of this citrus collection through specific projects: exhibitions, residencies, tastings offered to the public and, above all, through the redevelopment of two citrus gardens.
When redesigning its website in 2024, the Villa wanted to create an eco-designed site, i.e. a digital platform with optimized environmental costs (green hosting, reduced image weight, fluid navigation, etc.).
