Biography
It's not enough to have a project to become a director of Villa Medici. You have to understand how it works, its requirements and constraints. You learn how to become a director. Richard Peduzzi was born on January 28, 1943 in Argentan (Orne). Set designer, author, architect, painter, theater and opera decorator, he has been Director of the Academy de France in Rome since September 2002, after holding the same position at the Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs between 1990 and 2002. Since 1968, he has designed all the sets for Patrice Chéreau's stage productions, and created the architecture and staging for the Opéra rooms at the Musée d'Orsay, and the Louvre history rooms at the Musée du Louvre. He is responsible for the restoration and creation of furniture for the Musée de la Bibliothèque de l'Opéra Garnier. Peduzzi also designed the sets for the French pavilion at the Universal Exhibition in Seville (Spain, 1992) and for several of Luc Bondy's shows: Le Chemin solitaire (1988), Jouer avec le Feu (1996), Le Tour d'écrou (2001), Anatole (2002), Cruel and Tender (2003), Hercules for the Festival d'Aix (2004). He also designed the sets for Kurt Weil's The Grandeur and Decadence of the City of Mahagony, staged by Peter Zadek at the Salzburg Festival in 1997. He has also worked on numerous exhibitions: the Daniel Filipacchi and Necuhi Ertegun collections at the Guggenheim Museum in New York; Chardin at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais (1999); "Homage to Ferdinand de Medicis": Villa Medici in Rome (1999); "A la recherche de la Cité Idéale" exhibition at the Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans (2000); Nijinsky exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay (2000-2001).
