Biography
Paul-Maximilien Landowski, born June 1, 1875 in Paris and died March 31, 1961 in Boulogne-sur-Seine, was a French sculptor. He first trained in Jules Lefèbvre's studio, then entered the École nationale des beaux-arts de Paris on May 7, 1894. He studied under Louis-Ernest Barrias and Henri-Édouard Lombard. Landowski won the Prix de Rome in 1900 and arrived in Rome the same year. During his stay, he traveled in Italy and North Africa. He left Rome on December 31, 1904. On his return to France, he began work on his "Temple of Man", a lifelong project whose central theme is "the spiritual evolution of mankind". He received numerous public commissions for statues and commemorative monuments. Paul Landowski was Director of the French Academy in Rome from 1933 to 1937. He was then director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris until 1942.
